We should aim at recruiting a minimum of 15 students (combined graduate and undergraduate) to sign up as SIAM members, and to support the application for a student chapter. A good time frame would be around November. This would allow us to apply for funding and start activities next semester. What would you think about a get "acquainted meeting", with a keynote speaker together with some local industry representatives?
Following up with nisheeth comment, it would be good to list some areas of research of interest to students. Medtronic, Inc. sponsors student visits to the company headquarters (Plymouth). Is there anyone out there interested in visiting Medtronic?
Thanks Wavelet. That sounds like a great idea. I currently have about 35 people listed at some level of interest. I believe there is a January deadline for funding from the student fees. So we should be well organized before then.
I am delighted to see the interest in starting a SIAM student chapter at UMN. Terrific idea! I am a professor here and director of the IMA, and also very involved with SIAM (currently a member of the SIAM council and a candidate for president of SIAM among other things). SIAM is a terrific organization and the student chapters have done a lot to add vitality to the organization. There are more than 11,000 SIAM members, and about 1/3 of those are students. SIAM publishes many of the best books and the best journals in applied mathematics, and runs many excellent conferences. Increasingly there is significant involvement of students in the meetings, especially the annual meeting (usually held in nice places, like San Diego this summer). SIAM News is a must-read monthly newsletter.
It is not difficult to start a student chapter (everything you need to know is at http://www.siam.org/students/chapters/). The key ingredient is some energy and enthusiasm. I'll be happy to help in any way I can.

Oak Ridge suggests itself trivially .. there must be more
Looks like the interest in the chapter has died ignominiously, though :(

Wavelet if you could contact me at morri495@umn.edu I would appreciate it. I think it is a good time to have some kind of a first meeting soon.
